Certainly, there are many examples of people being violent. On a daily basis people are murdered or attacked for any number of reasons. Morgan, the protagonist, instinctively killed the large creature with a golf club near him out of fear. Nevertheless, in our own communities, we witness many situations where humanity is not violent. For example, the vast majority of the time, people are going about their business, working, visiting people, staying in shape etc. These activities are part of a peaceful society. It is only on news programs and wars where we see or know any violence. On news programs, they would usually report at the location where the incident took place and replaying the incident. Most are murders like school shootings that happened many times in the United States or public shooting. These deaths do not need to happen and since anyone is able to change from who they once were to who they want to be now. Some people do not recognize that there can be less violent ways to solve problems. And largely, most schools do not have violence and murders. Even in Canadian society, murder and violence for that matter is the exception. Take Toronto for example, it “had a homicide rate of 1.62 victims per 100,000 population in 2020, below the national rate of 1.95 and a 20% decrease from the previous year’s rate (2.03)” (Statscan). This low murder rate shows that people are not innately violent, but instead they get along very well with each other unlike the United States. According to Fox News, “The murder rate was estimated to be 6.9 murders per 100,000 people in 2021” (Fox News). However, there are vastly different gun laws in both countries with the US being much more lenient than Canada. By having tighter gun laws, then people are not as violent and murder people less, since guns are not available. In the short story, The Large Ant, Morgan had a golf club near him but if he did not have anything to use to kill the large “ant”, then he may not be as violent. He would probably take the time to see what the animal is before deciding whether to kill it or not. Close to the end of the story, when Morgan is talking to Lieberman, Fitzgerald, and Hopper, he is unsure whether or not killing is just “an accident” (Fast). Lieberman questioned Morgan if killing is just an accident by showing eight other specimens. He asked Morgan if “the eight jars in [his] cupboard [are all] accidents" (Fast). Morgan eventually realized that “[he did not] have [any] sense of anger” (Fast) when he killed the creature. Through these examples, it shows that humans are able to change if given the correct reasons.

In the short story, “The Pedestrian”, technology is so advanced that they limit human interaction. Mr. Leonard Mead walks along the street in his neighbourhood and he attempts to catch other people’s attention from outside their houses but no one answers him. Mead says, ‘“Hello, in there,” he whispered to every house on every side as he moved. “What’s up tonight on Channel 4, Channel 7, Channel 9? Where are the cowboys rushing, and do I see the United States Cavalry over the next hill to the rescue?”’ (Bradbury). This illustrates that people are not out of the homes interacting with other people or out walking like he is. They are isolated in their homes, watching TV, not interacting with other people. In the short story “The Pedestrian”, the highways are quite different from our highways because during the day, it’s very busy on the highways but when it comes to night, they are like “streams in a dry season, all stone and bed and moon radiance” (Bradbury). This illustrates how technology can affect the freedom of travelling around during the night. Normally, in our time, no matter what the time is, the highways still have cars driving about, shopping in supermarkets, malls etc., and visiting friends and relatives. The warning is that interaction with other people should not be undermined by technology.
